Attention Diesel Fanatics

Looking on to the 2008 season, What would you like to see in the diesel performance world? I know that there are big companies such as BANKS developing products for diesel trucks. I am sure that diesel car will make its way up the chain also. We are looking into some interesting aspects of diesel in which you will soon find out about. We just wanted to know if there are any areas of diesel (truck or car )that might need to be addressed.

Diesel

Drag racing and sled pulling.

A diesel buildup would be nice.

Swirl in head

Robert,
We're in the process of porting the cylinder head for an International pulling tractor. The stock intake port had considerable bias to induce swirl. However, we have enlarged the port considerably and plan on installing larger intake valves which will reduce the bias quite a bit. With turbo boost of 95 psi will removing most of the swirl bias hurt performance?

What will happen by not using a pressed-in seat ring on the intake valve?

Ron

It would be nice to read more about diesel engine from performance point of view.
There are some really good articles all over the net which describe pollution and smoke characteristics, but not too many higher rpm oriented articles directly related to hp production.

Just to name a few interests:
- DI engine swirl intake head porting with cross section area calculations and shaping
- Piston shape with injection angles
- Injection advance and rpm
- Header tube sizing for turbo diesel applications

I have found some articles which describe these areas in diesel world, but they are allways realted to some truck engines with max 2500rpm which is not much when lookiang at smaller diesels like VW 1.9TDi which are runinning above 5000rpm these days and producing over 260hp whit out adders.

I would like to see in 08

I would like to see is more productive motor work instead of just bolt ons. Maybe some head work or something in that area. Just something to get a little more power and more effiency.

You have mentioned some very good points of interset. We are under way with some cylinder head development, stay tuned!

All of the diesel performance info I ever see is for big engines to make gobs of power. Maybe there are a few guys like me who are rebuilding ordinary street machines, and want to optimize their diesel engines for fuel efficiency and street utility. Presumably many standard hot-rodding techniques, such as cleaning up and matching ports and manifolds, detailing combustion chambers, freeing up exhaust manifolds and pipes, can be brought from gasoline to diesel engine build-ups. But what things are peculiar to diesels? I have two small fours (Toyota and Nissan) and a six-cylinder (Nissan) diesel to go through at some point. And I just can't build an engine dead-stock; I have to try to improve it!!

Hello Robert,

As I introduced myself in and asked D.V. a couple of questions in his Powerquad thread, I would love to see a write up on cylinder head flow on the VW TDI engine.

Despite the small displacement, people are achieving the kind of specific power that rivals 900 HP Cummins and Powerstroke engines in a street-able package and able to return 40+ MPG in normal driving. However, head-work and cams are still relatively uncharted territory for but a few. I myself have done engine mods to the TDI and developed a performance cam for it.

Best regards,
Dave
