CONCORD, N.C. (May 24, 2008) NASCAR confiscated the primary cars of Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter Saturday prior to practice at Lowe's Motor Speedway after officials determined the upper wing mounts on the Haas CNC Racing Chevrolets were in the wrong location.
NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said Riggs' and Sauter's teams were told to use their backup cars in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 and they would start at the rear of the field. Riggs had qualified 13th in the 43-car field, while Sauter already had the last starting position. The primary cars were taken to NASCAR's R&D Center in Concord and Tharp said additional information on the two cars was expected next week.
It was brought to our attention, we followed up, we found it, we took those two cars, Tharp said in explaining how the violations were discovered. The garage is, what I would say, a fairly self-policing area, and we follow up on information we get. We are constantly inspecting race cars, and that was the situation with this.
Tharp said the mounts that were in the incorrect location were the ones where the upper part of the wing connected to each car's body.
