A Quick Look At Qualifying For The Kobalt Tools 500

  • Jeff Gordon claimed his first pole this season and his second in 32 career starts at Atlanta Motor Speedway during qualifying Friday night for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race. In earning his 64th career pole, Gordon recorded a 185.251-mph, 29.927-second lap.

  • Joining Gordon on the front row is Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. His Chevrolet was clocked at 184.862 mph, 29.990 seconds.

  • Patrick Carpentier, who had to make the field on speed, was the quickest rookie. His Dodge recorded a lap of 181.331 mph, 30.574 seconds, for the 21st starting position in the 43-car field.

  • Joe Nemechek was the fastest of the drivers who had to make the grid on time. His Chevrolet recorded a 30.504-second, 181.747-mph lap for the 17th starting spot.

  • Three of the top-five cars and six of the top 10 are Chevrolets.

  • The only Ford in the top 10 was driven by Carl Edwards. He nailed down the fourth starting position with a lap of 183.297 mph, 30.246 seconds.

  • Bobby Labonte led the Dodge contingent with the fifth quickest lap – 183.248 mph, 30.254 seconds.

  • Toyota's top qualifier was Kyle Busch in sixth with a 182.910-mph, 30.310-second lap.

  • Failing to qualify for the race were Ken Schrader, Bill Elliott, Johnny Benson, Burney Lamar and John Andretti.
