CONCORD, N.C. - Jimmy Heavlow is on a roll in the Lowe’s Motor Speedway Winter Heat Legends Car series with three feature wins in the last three weekends.
Starting in last Friday’s practice sessions, the current multiple class Maryland state WKA champion worked with his father on setting up his No. 3 Jim’s Marine/Mercury car for the Lowe’s Motor Speedway infield road course's curves and swoops.
“We changed a few things in the car,” he said. “We want to find a little more speed for the next week and fix some handling issues. It was pushing through the middle of the turns – don’t get me wrong, the car’s good.”
Young Heavlow started third in Heat 1, moving easily into the lead for the win before starting seventh in the second heat. The starting position didn’t hurt as he moved through the field to win that heat as well.
“The car’s just been great all weekend,” Heavlow commented.
When it came time for the Legends Semi-Pro feature race, Heavlow started in the lead and held that position through a red flag.
“The red flag hurt my groove,” he said after the race. “I was lucky I got back into it.”
“Back into it” he was, as he held the lead from flag-to-flag, taking his third straight feature win in the Winter Heat series.
The three wins, combined with a pair of second-place finishes in the first two races, pushed Heavlow’s point total to 494, more than 100 points ahead of his closest chaser.
Heavlow’s next race is the double-header at LMS’ infield road course scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 19-20, marking the penultimate races of the winter season.
