100-mpg car $10 million cash purse

A head-to-head in a race to prove they can deliver a 100-mpg car. Big names and hopeful hacks alike will have to show that their vehicles are not only economical and green, but economically realistic and practical.

Hmm... I know someone that's done it, and sells the hardware as a kit just for it. Though you're not guaranteed 100mpg, there have been quite a few examples topping tripple digitits.

I don't think any "kit" that you can put on any normal car is going to get the job done; this is not something that a wacko with a so-called 100mpg miracle carburetor is going to succeed with.

The "3-litre" (i.e. per 100 km, not displacement!) version of the VW Polo 1.2 TDI (or Audi A2 TDI) is probably the closest that a 4-passenger production vehicle could be to achieving this. A Prius will not do it. A Japanese kei-car with a gasoline engine will not do it. Pure electric cars will probably have trouble with the daily-driving and long-trip aspects of the testing.

Achieving this requires something with attention to aerodynamics, light weight, small engine that is as efficient as possible, maybe hybrid powertrain (or maybe not).

Pinhead, I'm sure you're talking about PICC. I trust what Mike Holler
is saying about this, and he is saying some very good things.

I'm sure you're not talking about the Housing Authority of Fulton County,
so it must be Hydro Assist Fuel Cell

If you folks want to enter that contest with add-on gizmos (PICC, HAFC, or whatever) go right ahead, but I've got a funny feeling that this path would be destined for a dose of reality (of the unpleasant variety) - but maybe it's just me. Everything *credible* that I've ever seen about hydrogen-injection or fuel-catalysts or anything of the sort is that they accomplish ... nothing.
