Question David Vizard - Max Performance Chevy on a Budget Question.

Hi David...I really enjoy your "Max performance Chevy Small Blocks on a Budget" Book, I do quite a bit of reading for my project, because I can afford a book, but the engine components come a little less frquently. I have read a lot of books, and by far...that one is the best for my situation! Thank you!

I have settled on Engine Combination #4 in your book. I have a 68 camaro, and I think the low end torque would suuit the application well. So you combo calls for:

1. Kieth Black signature series 122 Hyperutectic pistons (I have)
2. Reground 400, or Scat Alternative cast steel (I have)
3. Alternative Scat 6" full floating rods (I have)
4. Reworked stock oil (I have)
5. Comp Cams 270 H on 106 LCA (I do not have, and cannot find)
6. Heads 186s with full porting. Holley 750 Vac Sec and butterflies (I do not have)

I have two questions:
1. I am not confident in my porting skills (even though I have read your porting book), could you recommend a set of heads that will deliver the required performance "out of the box"?
2. Would you recommend an alternative Cam, or should I order a custom unit to your specs?

Best,

Michael Murguia
Thank you, and thanks again fo the great books!

Be sure to check out the eq cylinderhead article in the technical section. They are one of the best as cast 23 degree heads we have tested iron or aluminum. They would also be a great head to hone your porting skills. The port design is 90% perfect as is and would let you get a feel for porting with out worrying about botching them up. Also we have had great luck with AED carbs absolutely worth the little extra cash because it will save you so much dyno time.

Mike,
sorry about the delay replying here - I am just redoing my max performanmce on a budget book and what with all the engine projects currently going through the shop I am topped out. Call Comp and order the custom cam specc as per your post.

Dusty - thanks for picking up the slack here with a response. The EQ head would be a very good choice.
DV
