I guess that not being a Chevy V8 this hasn't attracted the attention it deserves but cracking job there. I'm not quite sure where you're going to get coolant into the thing given where the cambelt tensioner is situated but the concept and execution is first class. I'll look forward to seeing how many ponies it develops in due course.

thank you very much dave , yes its going to need a electric water pump ,and a take off to the block or should i say a 'put in' ,and then out of the block up through the head gasket and out of the back of the head throgh the original fiat thermostat housing .

regards robert

hes doing fine david, just started working in heat pump technology ,down in cornwall .

well with the mini , the whole idea was to try to build a 16v on as little money as possible ,like all my projects really.

i havent really fully developed my 5 port mini(150 bhp 6600rpm on 9.5 psi) so i really want to get on with that ,but i found this head at the scappy (10 quid)so thought hey iv got a lathe lets try it out !

so i marked the block ,after tapping and taper plugging the original holes ,and drilled out the holes with a hand drill and 3mm countersunk drill, then tried patheltically to use a giant piller drill to make the holes to tap out for the studs ,

this went wrong ,

and in the end i drilled them with a hand drill through a 2 inch piece on cast steel to hold it square to the block face ,so no money on milling work ,although i did use the 1902 giant mill at the scappy to face off the block after plugging .

i then turned down the studs to clear the cam chest of the fiat head ,and worked out the cam timing which was easy cos the cams are not dowelled ,just done up tight !
i used timing i felt was appropriate and that also meant i had no valve piston contact , so no machining there .

i made a 1.5 mm steel spacer plate to sandwich between two head gakets in the prototype version ,cos i know it works ,but in a high boost version id go for a mls gasket made for the job . cr is 8.8 to 1.

i turned up a couple of rings with seals to seal the end of the crank and cam/oil pump drve ,and the pump drive also incorporates a end place shoulder .

then made a couple of discs of ally to hold the belt true on the idler/oil pump drive shaft ,and turned down the old sprockets for the fiat sprocket to bolt to and the crank oil seal to run on .

oil feed to the head was from the gallery feeding the mains ,and fed in under the cam pulley , i used hard copper line (12 quid total .)

cam belt was polo ,18 quid .

think thats about it , im running a propane carb from the scrappy ,and the turbo is a kkk k24 with a k27 compressor (i think ) it was a donation of a rs2 audi .

i have pics if youd like some

regards robert

oh
the ignition is a edis toothed wheel and a esc2 ford ignition box on limp home mode so fixed 10 degrees ,then a msd dig2 box for a lot of complicated controlling !this was also donated by a company id helped a few times with calibrating thier rolling rd etc .

project 27

this is now evolving inot a project of its own ,a rd/ drag track car .
this will be known as project 27.

spec is to run the fiat/a series engine , on an auto box ,modified ,
and totally lightweight mini,3 link back tube axle ,coilovers ,and 13 inch front wheels with 185/60 or 195 50 / 13 tyres for grip ,this being the biggest problem at drag racing . i have no idea if i can make the box cope ,with more clutches and higher line pressure ...i may run it with a clutch , i did this a long time ago with a c4 and it was great for racing .. a few pics of the victim .

Someone done it

I've looked at fitting that head to an A series for a number of years but Mini's are not my thing really. I tried to convince a customer to do it but he's gone down the 8v BMW motorbike head route instead.

Well Done!
