shorter deck heights

Whats the reason for running a shorter (8.800) deck over the standard ( 8.990 - 9.0 ) deck?

I see more and more running shorter decks.

One reason is the high RPM's that they will turn and making an intake manifold with the correct runner length and a good alignment with the port.

Another reason is you have to run a shorter push rod which will reduce weight

Going along with the light weight idea, you should be able to build a
lighter piston/rod combination with the shorter deck height.

Along with the other things mentioned ...

Lighter overall weight of block and it lowers the weight in the car (ie lower c/g)

The shorter pushrods are then stronger/stiffer as well as lighter.

For a lower rpm engine you would probably not use a short deck block (for a sbc anyway). The very high rpm Comp type engines seem to be where these things help, especially the runner length and angle that Stan mentioned.

Rick

PS .. great site
