305 Sbc

Hi David,

Nice website and forum! I happened across it while at the DART Machinery site.

I'm probably going to get a few stones thrown in my direction for just the thought of using a 305 for anything other than a boat anchor but they are in fact plentiful and dirt cheap at the boneyards. As an observation, the 305's small bore will shroud the valves (compared to the 350's 4" bore) and the overall casting is thinner or at least it appears to be. Other than that it's still a sbc I would be interested to hear your thoughts on a 305 budget build up.

Cheers,
Brad

Being a horse power junkie I always stayed away from the 305 but there has been a lot of good builds on the 305 platform, If you do a search you will find lots of info.

With the cost of fuel going up and the abundance of 305's laying around you may see a lot more.

Here is one,

When looking for a bargain at the bone yard, don't overlook the 6.0L Chevy engine.
OK, sure you will pay more for the initial engine, look at what you get for the price.
Modern engine design, light weight hi flowing aluminum cylinder heads, hyd. roller
cam and lifters (just to mention a few). The best part about it is, more than likely
won,t need a rebuild. Don't like the idea of FI, put a carb. on it.

As for the 305; with all the money it takes to build a high performance engine, why
try to save a few bucks on the block. Keep looking for a good 4" bore block, in the
end, you will be happy you did.

This one probably pissed off a few people on both sides of the fence, but it has some very good LS1 engine swap info.

Hey Brad, we do alot of 305's for a certain type of boat called a jersey skiff. If you really have your heart set on a 305 build, pm me and you can give me a call at the shop and maybe I can help you out with your build. Josh
