Camshaft Selection Question

For FlowSpecialist and others, I would like to ask, in the context of racing, what quantitative tools do you use outside of simulation programs to determine intake camshaft requirements, particularly lift and duration? Comments as to the exhaust side would be welcomed as well.

Lift would appear to be strongly influenced by valve diameter and we have been using ratios of 30% to 32% with reasonable success in 4V in-line four cylinder drag racing. Duration would appear to be driven by, among other things, stroke, rod ratio and RPM although we do not have neat little equations to bundle these variables.

And FlowSpecialist, do you know David Baker?
