Since a good many Cup races are won on fuel mileage why aren't Cup cars running vacuum advance for fuel mileage when they are under the yellow flag?

Certainly a more intense, longer duration spark leads to a more efficient combustion of your fuel mixture. The goal is to be able to provide an ignition system(coil and module) that is strong enough to jump a wider plug gap. When you are able to open up your gaps, you naturally expose additional energy into the combustion chamber, hence a higher percentage of your fuel mixture is burned on each piston stroke. This will improve mpg, UNLESS you want to enjoy the added performance/power that a high output ignition can provide.
This is where your particular driving style comes into play. You can "step on it" for the extra performance or drive conservatively to improve your mpg. Of course, in our field, most customers do a little of both.
