Vermont Chamber Names Ken Squier Citizen Of the Year

STOWE, Vt. -- Veteran motorsports broadcaster Ken Squier has been selected as the Vermont Chamber Citizen of the Year by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce.

Squier will be honored at a March 1 dinner at The Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa. The award honors the person who contributes to Vermont communities on a state-wide basis through service, self-sacrifice, and volunteer work.

"I am truly honored to receive the award," Squier said, "especially considering the list of the past recipients, all of whom have made such enormous contributions to the State of Vermont."

Squier owns the RadioVermont group with the flagship station WDEV 550 AM and 96.1 FM and sister stations WLVB 93.9FM, WKDR 1390 AM and WCVT 101.7 FM, the only commercial classical station in Vermont. For more than 75 years, Vermont residents have known WDEV for its news coverage, community involvement and local flavor. Squier also has a notable career in national broadcasting, including more than 30 years working for CBS and FOX.

He also co-owns Central Vermont's Thunder Road, which is known for its outstanding stock car racing series in the summer. His passion for racing changed NASCAR forever. He convinced CBS to televise the Daytona 500 from start to finish, and he was instrumental in the placement of the in-car camera.

Squier's community involvement is equally impressive. He is the board chairman for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and he is a longtime member of the Central Vermont Adult Basic Education Board of Directors. He also has won numerous awards, mostly for his nationally respected broadcasting talent. He is a member of the Hall of Fame for the Vermont Association of Broadcasters and the Vermont Principals Association. He also has won the Vermont Broadcasters' Distinguished Service award.

Squier has promoted literacy, raised money for historical causes, and frequently takes the RadioVermont team on the road for events throughout Vermont.

"Mr. Squier's long history of service to the community in which he lives typifies the true spirit of the Citizen of the Year Award," Vermont Chamber President Duane Marsh said. "In fact, his name is synonymous with the word 'Vermont.'"
