David, I think you nailed the problem with the Extrude Hone that most do not do. What you want to do is get the basic shape of the intake manifold pretty much correct before you Extrude Hone it. That way you get the most bang for the money spent. The Extrude Hone will not correct the major errors as the manifold in the article had.
